Westerners generally refer to rice wine ordered in a Japanese restaurant as sake. But actually sake refers to all kinds of alcoholic beverages including nihonshu, plum wine and whisky. Nihonshu refers specifically to brewed rice wine (not distilled). The alcohol content can vary from 12 – 20%. This non-authentic izakaya is overpriced and expect to get shooed out the door if you don’t keep ordering more of the overpriced items. Let’s see how long this one will stay in business. Update 03/02/19: Izakaya Ida is closed for renovation.
On October 19th, 2018 I went to a fun restaurant in the East Village named Autre Kyo Ya and had an interesting experience. They describe themselves as a French restaurant utilizing elements of Japanese cuisine. The results were interesting and the dishes are quite different from an izakaya. First off,
